The anointment of Andrew Holness was apparently orchestrated by Bruce Golding and Edward Seaga arising out of the Dudus fiasco in 2010. He was presented the Jamaican electorate as young, transparent and firmly against corruption.
It is inconceivable that the leader of a major political party in any country organize their own financial affair in an offshore jurisdiction to minimize taxes while he is prepared to exert taxes to his heart content on citizens of the country over which he presides. ADMAT the St. Lucian registered company must be wound up and all assets held there-under be placed in a Jamaican person(s) (individual(s) or corporation).
Dual citizenship disqualifies a person from running for elected office in Jamaica yet an elected official is at liberty to shelter his assets in a tax haven.
Age to govern
The celebration around Andrew that he is the youngest prime minister to lead Jamaica ought to have raised the alarm. Men in particular get easily drunk with power and see doubles at too young a age (wife and mistresses, lavish parties etc.); experience teaches wisdom.
The religious landscape is likely to slip from Sunday worship, thanks to Bruce with the appointment of Seventh-day Adventist Governor General in 2009 and anointment of JLP Leader (2011).
Pre-signed resignation letters
In January 2012 as opposition leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Andrew secured pre-signed resignation letters prior to the appointment of JLP members to the Senate. Two additional letters were also pre-signed, one to the Governor General and the other to the JLP leader authorizing the leader to date and deliver such letters to the Governor General when he Andrew considered it necessary.
Arthur Williams, himself a lawyer and drafter of those said letters, objected to the tendering of the letter to resign him. He brought an action in the High Court against the Andrew and won. Andrew appealed the decision and lost.
This was all about ensuring party unity among opposition senators on any future debate to amend the constitution to replace the Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and not for use against Senators who did not support the Leader of Opposition in internal party elections.
Probationary appointment of Chief Justice
Hon. Justice Bryan Sykes appointment to act as Chief Justice on February 1, 2018 by Prime Minister Andrew Holness was unprecedented. Andrew eventually bowed under threat of the Bar Association taking the matter to the Privy Council.
In fact, this practice of politicians appointing judges is ridiculous when one considers the notion of separation of powers for good governance.
It reminds me of a former President of the Court of Appeal and People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament, Hon. Carl Rattray, when asked how he would preside over matters involving a supporter of his party stated he would recuse himself.
National Identification System (NIDS)
The JLP government passed the NIDS on November 23, 2017 and the opposition PNP promises to repeal and replace the bill when it is returned to power because certain sections are considered unconstitutional. While this matter is before the court the Prime Minister continues to speak on it.
One big question for me is the matter of data security; Google, Equifax Inc., and other behemoths are unable to contain security breaches, how is the government going do better?
State of Public Emergency (SOPE)
The state of emergency introduced by the government in January 2018 and which it sought to extend beyond its constitutional life was voted down by the opposition in December 2018. Mr. Holness sought to brand and blame the opposition as supporting crime.
Historic visit to Israel
Two of Jamaica’s most popular musicians would be dumbfounded had they been alive in January 2017 to see Andrew Holness visit Israel and hear of his cooperation with Israel on matters of national security. The parliament of Jamaica is not privy to matters discussed, but we know how Israel treats the Palestinians and Jews in Africa.
At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, a Palestinian terrorist group is alleged to have massacred eleven Israeli team members. The Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, responded with the 1973 raid on Lebanon and operation Wrath of god, tracked down and killed Palestinians suspected of involvement.
Andrew the neophyte for reasons known to him took on the portfolio ministry of energy when the other Andrew was turfed out. Mr. Holness has stated his agreement to the settlement package awarded to Yolande Ramharrack and the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sancia Bennet Templer refused to disclose information about the NDA due to confidentiality. Of all persons, Government Junior Minister Everald Warmington is the lone JLP voice to question this madness and that of PetroJam involvement in its own audit.
Yolande probationary period was waived by former general manager Floyd Grindley.
The constitution and rule of law cannot shackle this Holmess. Andrew’s dictatorial tendency is frightening and political representatives in parliament are just that, not the people’s representative.
Hoping Warmy will save us from the terrible!
